Is the fact that Srila Prabhupada uses the expression “a self realised, Krishna conscious man” in OT purport a sufficient reason to replace His own expression ” A self realised person (in Krishna consciousness)” in the OT verse itself with “A self-realized man (in Krishna Consciousness)? Here again Srila Prabhupada with His contradictory statements prompts us to think hard. Due to the sensitive nature of the topic, we believe it is NOT a sufficient reason and we shall call both editors sexists. Besides that why did they drop the two expressions “Krishna conscious” and “Krishna consciousness”. That is not at all acceptable either and we shall call them lacking in their Krishna consciousness for this blunt and flagrant Krishna neglect.
And for the sake of the same balance between verse and purport sought in both editions V1 and V2 previously and considering the times we live in, we shall move in the opposite direction and replace Prabhupada’s “A self-realized, Krishna conscious MAN has no longer any obligation to fulfil to any prescribed duty, save and except the activities in terms of Krishna consciousness.” of the purport with Prabhupada’s own expression in the verse itself “A self-realized, Krishna conscious PERSON has no longer any obligation to fulfil to any prescribed duty, save and except the activities in terms of Krishna consciousness.” Srila Prabhupada, I hope I am passing your test successfully and I know that you are a progressive and sometimes revolutionary philosophic-religious-scientific innovator. All glories to you! When I offer them Your Bhagavad Gita, people often ask me point blank: Is this a religion? It seems I have just found the very correct answer to this people’s question. Yours is a “pilosophic-religious and scientific ideology.” It is not a religion in the traditional sense of the term. My MacBook Pro Dictionary gives for religion:
“religion | rɪˈlɪdʒ(ə)n | noun [mass noun] the belief in and worship of a superhuman power or powers, especially a God or gods: “
Krishna Consciousness is not just a belief!
I can believe anything I like and the crazy person will believe any crazy thing he or she likes. Does that make it a reality? Obviously not. It is only a clever strategy for the atheist to advertise religion as a “belief”only, thus making it totally a subjective subject matter, outside the realm of reason and science. But they are wrong! They are wrong at least as far as Krishna consciousness is concerned and Srila Prabupada has clearly proven this fact by debating and defeating all opposing elements. And as His representatives we must be able and willing to do the same.
This is in line with Srila Prabhupada’s statement in purport of BGAII 3.3:
In the Second Chapter, verse 39, the Lord explained two kinds of procedures — namely sankhya-yoga and karma-yoga, or buddhi-yoga. In this verse, the Lord explains the same more clearly. Sankhya-yoga, or the analytical study of the nature of spirit and matter, is the subject matter for persons who are inclined to speculate and understand things by experimental knowledge and philosophy. The other class of men work in Krsna consciousness, as it is explained in the 61st verse of the Second Chapter. The Lord has explained, also in the 39th verse, that by working by the principles of buddhi-yoga, or Krsna consciousness, one can be relieved from the bonds of action; and, furthermore, there is no flaw in the process. The same principle is more clearly explained in the 61st verse — that this buddhi-yoga is to depend entirely on the Supreme (or more specifically, on Krsna), and in this way all the senses can be brought under control very easily. Therefore, both the yogas are interdependent, as religion and philosophy. Religion without philosophy is sentiment, or sometimes fanaticism, while philosophy without religion is mental speculation. The ultimate goal is Krsna, because the philosophers who are also sincerely searching after the Absolute Truth come in the end to Krsna consciousness. This is also stated in the Bhagavad-gita. The whole process is to understand the real position of the self in relation to the Superself. The indirect process is philosophical speculation, by which, gradually, one may come to the point of Krsna consciousness; and the other process is directly connecting everything with Krsna in Krsna consciousness. Of these two, the path of Krsna consciousness is better because it does not depend on purifying the senses by a philosophical process. Krsna consciousness is itself the purifying process, and by the direct method of devotional service it is simultaneously easy and sublime. (This passage is from version 2 and will still have to pass the Version 3 test. Unfortunately this is not possible for the time being as Original Tanscript is missing for now)
The communists have their ideology. The capitalist have their own ideology and conflict with one another. His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the Founder of the International Hare Krishna Movement, the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust (BBT) and Back to Godhead Magazine (BTG) offers the synthesis of both with His very own philosophic-religious dialectism and ideology.
Proposed final versions three for BGAII 3.18:
Verse.
A self-realized person (in Krishna consciousness) has no purpose to fulfil while executing his prescribed duties, nor has he any reason not to perform such work. Nor has he any need to take shelter of any other living being. (This is Srila Prabhupada’s own style of expression in particular in regard to the use of “person” and pronouns attached to the word.)
Purport.
A self-realized, Krishna conscious person has no longer any obligation to fulfil in regard to any prescribed duty, save and except the activities in terms of Krishna consciousness. Neither represents such Krishna consciousness inactivity, as it will be explained in the following verses. A Krishna conscious person does not take shelter of any other person–man or demigod. Whatever he does in terms of Krishna consciousness is sufficient in the discharge of his obligation.
or alternatively in gender neutrality:
A self-realized person (in Krishna consciousness) has no purpose to fulfil while executing its prescribed duties, nor has it any reason not to perform such work. Nor has it any need to take shelter of any other living being.
Whatever it does in terms of Krishna consciousness is sufficient in the discharge of its obligation.
Just recently I have received advise from an authorised source that
| “In the Sanskrit dictionary, mahātmā can be masculine, feminine, or neuter” Similarly a person can be a male of a female but for all practical purposes the word “person” should be a neuter and be represented by the pronoun “it”. So it all makes grammatical sense and we are herewith reforming the English language as well. Please be prepared to move your border / frontier anchors and get accustomed to it. After everything is said and done my final inclination is as follows: 3.18 A self-realized person (in Krishna consciousness) has no purpose to fulfil while executing his prescribed duties, nor has he any reason not to perform such work. Nor has he any need to take shelter of any other living being. Purport. A self-realized, Krishna conscious man has no longer any obligation to fulfil in respect to any prescribed duty, save and except the activities in terms of Krishna consciousness. Neither represents such Krishna consciousness inactivity, as it will be explained in the following verses. A Krishna conscious man does not take shelter of any person–man or demigod. Whatever he does in terms of Krishna consciousness is sufficient in the discharge of his obligations. Let us just stick to Srila Prabhupada as tightly as possible. The principles of editing being as follow: Modify Prabhupada’s rendition only if there is no alternative. Twist OUR OWN MINDS IF WE HAVE TO to understand what Srila Prabhupada wants to say. Don’t add non Prabhupada text as Hayagriva and Jayadvaita are doing. This is the symptom of an uncontrolled mind. Don’t subtract for ultimate motives. Don’t modify unnecessarily. |
